The Indian Premier League or IPL as most of us know it as, is on in full swing. Now many of us are busy at work or are on our way home from work when most of these matches are played, so it’s hard to tune it on the action on TV. Many app development houses have been working on apps for various mobile platforms that let users stay updated with the latest happenings, scores, commentary and schedules of these matches. We’re looking at some of the free apps available for the most popular mobile platforms.
IPL 5 Calendar and Live Score (Android)
A rather feature rich app with widgets for the Android desktop
IPL5 Calendar and Live Score is one of the more popular IPL apps on the Android Play store with a ton of downloads and votes. Like most of the other free apps, you’ll find an ad banner on both the app and also the Android desktop widget, that gives you a reminder of upcoming cricket matches. The scoreboard lists all the recent matches along with the team logos along with detailed scores and statistics. If you’re looking for records broken through the series, you’ll find those details too through the Series Stats menu. Live scores are updated automatically and you also have the option of entering the frequency of updates. Users can choose to be notified when a wicket falls as well. There’s also a commenting section for those who want to leave comments for other app users to see. The live scores along with the ability to interact with other fans makes it a rather interesting app to use on your Android device.
Official DLF IPL 2012 (Android / Blackberry)
The official app for the IPL cricket league
The IPL has its own official app out for Android and BlackBerry devices. The apps are pretty identical in terms of features on both platforms but there are a few differences as far as the user interfaces go - that’s it. The interface on the Android platform appears more colourful. There are detailed statistics and personal details of all the players from the various teams. You can also browse through the past few days and look at results of the matches held then. Users can also browse through photo galleries of matches and practice sessions being held at the different venues. Then, you have the list of all the matches being played at the different stadiums being clearly mentioned along with the teams. The BlackBerry app doesn’t have videos and the UI looks a little underwhelming. Nevertheless, it gives you the information you need.

IPL 2012 (WP7)
A simple, quick WP7 app with option to add reminders
Windows Phone 7 is a relatively new platform but there are some very promising devices being sold at affordable prices. There’s a slow and steady increase in users and if you’re one of them, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a WP7 for you IPL fans too. It’s called IPL 2012 and it’s available for free on the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. The app has a bunch of features that’ll keep you busy and informed no matter where you are. You can browse through the teams and the players and there’s a constant news feed of the happenings of the league. If you want to keep reminders of upcoming matches, you have the option to do that too. Of course, live scores are an important component of this app. The great thing about IPL 2012 is that it’s free, but you might see an occasional ad banner pop up at the bottom of the screen.
A solid app for IPL fans using iOS, WP7 or Android devices
Yahoo! Cricket is another app that’s present on a number of platforms - everything from Android to iOS and Windows 7 handhelds. There’s also an iPad version of the table with similar features. the user interface of the app has an edge on some of the others being talked about. The Windows Phone 7 version if at all, is a bit different than the iOS and Android versions. The live scores are detailed with information of the current score as well as the runs for the entire over. The app, at least on Android is quick and all of the content loads quickly. There’s very detailed text commentary as well. News for example is loaded within the interface itself, so the app doesn’t have to load the default browser. The photo gallery too is intuitive with good quality photos along with captions placed along the bottom. The app doubles as a cricket app for other international leagues and matches as well. There’s a detailed listing of all the players in the teams along with stats for test, one day and T20 matches.
T20 League 5 (iOS)
The simplest of the lot - only for those who want schedule and news
The T20 League 5 app doesn’t look as impressive as the IPL 2012 apps or the Yahoo! Cricket apps and is really simple in terms of design. There’re no fancy photos or videos featured in this app, but there is news. So if you’re looking for a lightweight iOS app with a simple schedule and news from the IPL league, give this a shot.
