Samsung has not been very forthcoming about the Android 4.4 KitKat update for its older Galaxy devices, and numerous leaks have given us heads-ups. Now, purported internal Samsung document is doing the rounds of the Web, with a list of Galaxy devices that are set to receive an update.
The leaked document, procured and supposedly verified by Sammobile, contains seven phones (excluding three LTE variants) supposedly due to receive the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update. Notably, the Galaxy Note II is marked on the list as due to receive the update in April, which falls in line with users reporting receiving the update in late-April. The update began rolling out to India in early-May.
The Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the Galaxy Note II is said to have brought features like full screen album art; option to bring camera shortcut on the lock screen; transparent status bar; wireless printing functionality; NFC tap-to-pay support; option to set default messaging and launcher apps, and is also set to revamp the overall response time and speed of the phablet.
The other devices marked on the leaked internal Android 4.4.2 KitKat update document are theSamsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S III LTE, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Mini LTE, Galaxy Grand 2 , Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3. While most phones on that list are scheduled to receive their update in June, there are two exceptions. The Galaxy Note 3 Neo is expected to receive an update in May, while the Android 4.4.2 update for the Galaxy S III (GT-I9300) "has been cancelled due to unsolved problems."
It has been also understood that the international Samsung Galaxy S III version (GT-I9300) might receive the Android KitKat treatment due to some 'unresolved problems'. The issues are said to prevail due to the handset's 1GB of RAM (LTE and US models come with 2GB of RAM).
Since the handset was launched in May 2012, it also falls under the 18-month policy of Google for updates. To recall, Google has clearly mentioned that handsets which are more than 18 months old would not receive any new Android update. However, Sammobile claims tipster has sent them a developer report of the Galaxy S III's KitKat test build, which shows it as unsuccessful in implementing Android 4.4.2 KitKat along with TouchWiz applications on the Galaxy S III.
Additionally, Sammobile notes that the firm is currently testing Android 4.4.3 OS update for its recently launched Samsung Galaxy S5.
