Apple will make a push to sell more iPhones just weeks before its Worldwide Developers Conference, a new report says.
Starting May 8, Apple will contact customers around the globe via e-mail to inform them that they're eligible to upgrade their iPhones to the iPhone 5C or iPhone 5S, 9to5Mac reported Monday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the company's plans. Apple may also mention its trade-in program, allowing customers to turn in their handsets and get a discount on a new purchase.
Despite the obvious -- Apple wanting to sell more handsets -- it's not clear why the company is making what 9to5Mac's sources say is an "enormous" iPhone push. It's possible, however, that the company wants to deplete stock as the Worldwide Developers Conference inches closer to its June 2 start. It's also possible that Apple will at least announce new iPhones at that time, which could hurt sales of its current handsets as customers decide to wait a few extra months to get the very latest device.
The latest rumors suggest that Apple has two new iPhones in the works. The first, the iPhone 6, would come with a 4.7-inch display, dwarfing the current 4-inch option in the iPhone 5S. There's also talk of an iPhone phablet launching later this year featuring a 5.5-inch screen.
