Theoretical physicist: Moore's Law has just 10 years to go

Here's another warning that the end is within view for Moore's Law, one of the backbone theories of the computing industry.
Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku predicts that in "10 years or so we will see the collapse of Moore's Law. In fact, already, we are seeing a slowing down of Moore's Law. Computing power simply cannot maintain its rapid exponential rise using standard silicon technology."

In a presentation Kaku made earlier in the month, Kaku noted that a Pentium chip today "has the layer almost down to 20 atoms across...when that layer gets down to 5 atoms across, it's all over. You have two effects. The heat generated will be so intense that the chip will melt."
The other problem he sees: leakage.
You don't know where the electron is anymore. The quantum theory takes over. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle says you don't know where that electron is anymore meaning it could be outside the wire, outside the Pentium chip, or inside the Pentium chip. So there is an ultimate limit set by the laws of thermodynamics and set by the laws of quantum mechanics as to how much computing power you can do with silicon."
In the near term, Kaku expects the industry will try and tweak current and future processor generations with known technology, squeezing out what it can out from what passes as current state-of-the-art. But he expects the industry ultimately will have no choice but to embrace new approaches, such as molecular computers or quantum computers.
For the record, though, Intel says it's not worried. "It's not that it's impossible. It's that it's increasingly more challenging to do it," an Intel spokesman said. "Gordon Moore himself has said that eventually Moore's law will run out 'but every time i turn around, I'm fascinated how we've been able to extend it.'"

Google sums up its Java case: 'There was no copying'




After Oracle made its closing statements on Monday morning at the U.S. District Court, Google's Robert Van Nest stepped up to the plate, defending'Android's' implementation of the 37 Java APIs at question in this lawsuit.
Van Nest's core defense rested on positioning this as a case of fair use, asserting that Android is not a copy of Java 5.0 SE but rather a "substantially" different work with different success in the market.
"It's a whole platform that didn't exist before and transformed the use of Java for a smartphone stack," asserted Van Nest.
Van Nest outlined four points to Google's position in this intellectual property suit:
  • Sun gave the Java language to the public
  • Google built Android using free and open technologies
  • Google made fair use of the Java language APIs in Android
  • Sun publicly approved Android's use of Java
"Copyright infringement requires that you copy something," Van Nest said. "There was no copying here because Google knew that it couldn't use Sun's source code."
Also on copyrights, Van Nest pointed to the jury's instructions about judging "the work as a whole," which actually consists of all 166 class libraries and all that entails (i.e. implementing codes, names, declarations, etc.) -- adding up to 2.8 million lines of code in Java 5.0 SE. Van Nest added that Oracle has to prove that it was "more likely than not that copyright infringement occurred."
"This kind of use of APIs in this way where you use the minimum you need to be compatible is fair use," Van Nest declared.
Additionally, a good portion of Van Nest's closing arguments was based on the testimony of former Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz last Thursday.
Although Schwartz acknowledged that Sun wasn't happy that it couldn't come to a partnership agreement with Google, Van Nest recalled that Schwartz did say that Sun supported Android's use of Java nor did it have any grounds to file a lawsuit.
"For years, Sun had been promoting use of Java programming language," Van Nest said. "That was their whole business plan."
Again pointing to Schwartz's November 2007 blog post in which he congratulated Google for the debut of Android, Van Nest reminded the jury that Schwartz knew Android was written in Java and must have included the Java APIs in question ahead of the SDK release.
"If that isn't an affirmative endorsement of a product, I don't know what is," Van Nest lambasted.
To further hammer down Sun and Oracle's previous support for Android, Van Nest reminded the jury about a video of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison at JavaOne in 2009, where Ellison said Oracle expected to see more Java devices coming from "our friends at Google," and that Google had done "a fantastic job" in opening up Java.
Although specifics about Android revenue and other financial matters have been banned from the presence of the jury in this trial, Van Nest reasserted the open source status of Android as a benefit to the developer community.
"The point is that Google doesn't make any money on licensing or selling Android," Van Nest said, explaining that Google decided to make it open "to foster innovation and get widespread use."
In his rebuttal argument, Oracle counsel Michael Jacobs spoke again about how Android has blocked Java from success in the smartphone market, reiterating that it is "impossible" to compete with a free version of its licensed products.
Jacobs concluded, "We need the help of the justice system to enforce our intellectual property rights."
After closing arguments for the first segment of the trial ended on Monday morning, Judge William Alsup proceeded with the rest of the instructions for the jury about ruling on copyright infringement contentions.
The jury, made up of seven women and five men, will begin deliberating today for one hour and then pick up again on Tuesday morning. Judge Alsup previously warned both parties that the jury could take up to a week to deliberate, but he predicted that they would come back within a day and a half. The decision must be unanimous.
After they return with a verdict, the case will move into the second segment of the trial, focusing on patents.

iPad '4G' claims face scrutiny from UK regulator



        In Australia, iPad users unhappy with 4G claims were offered refunds
The BBC understands the regulator is not satisfied that Apple has complied with an agreement to amend claims about the latest iPad's 4G capabilities.
The UK does not yet have widespread 4G coverage, and the iPad will be incompatible with it when it does.
The regulator said it had received dozens of complaints in relation to the issue. Apple has declined to comment.
The regulator had resolved some of the complaints after discussions with Apple about changes to its advertising, but said it is now looking into further concerns raised by consumers.
A letter to one complainant seen by the BBC says that Apple "have advised us that no further reference to the 4G capabilities of the iPad will be made on their UK website".
The letter goes on to say that this will resolve the complaint, and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) will consequently be closing the file.
The ASA told the BBC that when it approached Apple the company said it had removed references to 4G from the webpage subject to the complaint, and had edited a video that contained references to 4G.
'Potentially problematic'
But Apple's UK site still offers consumers the chance to buy a "wi-fi + 4G" version of the iPad.
A footnote explains that "4G LTE" is supported only on certain networks in the United States and Canada.
The ASA said it had since been contacted by several complainants who had identified other "potentially problematic claims" about the iPad and 4G on the website.

"If it appears that the problem claims we asked Apple to remove are still appearing," the regulator said, "we will investigate these new complaints."
Apple said it would not comment on its discussions with the regulator, but a source at the company insisted that no undertaking was given to remove all references to 4G from its site.
Incompatible
4G mobile phone networks, which promise much faster web surfing, have yet to arrive in the UK.
But even when they do, the frequencies to be employed for the new networks in Britain - and the rest of Europe - are different from those used in the US and Canada.
That means that the "4G" iPad, in its current configuration, can never connect to 4G networks in Europe.
Apple is also in dispute with Australian regulators over the advertising of the iPad there.
The country's Competition and Consumer Commission accused the firm of misleading consumers by telling them that the product could connect to a 4G network in Australia when that was not the case.
Apple offered to refund any iPad buyers who felt that they had been misled.

Samsung Is World's Largest Smartphone Maker


amsung has now emerged as the largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world, toppling Nokia from the pole position it held for 14 years. While several major players including Apple have vied for this status, it is the Korean giant that was finally able to achieve what was once thought impossible. Additionally, the company also breezed past Apple as the top smartphone seller worldwide by capturing 31% market share during the first three months of this year. Nokia, on the other hand, experienced a decline in shipments by 24% during the same period, despite introducing strong Windows Phone handsets.
It is known that Samsung furnishes only the number of shipments, rather than the number it could sell. This has led to some analysts to dispute its claim to the throne. However, a majority of the experts seem to support the company's right to the title. Most expect Apple to grow further in the coming months, but fear that it will be difficult to offset Sasmsung's sales because it has an ace up its sleeve, namely the read GALAXY S III. The prospects are still considered gloomy for Nokia, however, and it will have to pull itself up together by the boot strings, in order to survive against the onslaught of these two mobile giants. Govt. to set up National Threat Intelligence Centre to fight cyber crime



The Indian government is planning to set up a National Threat Intelligence Centre in view of rising cyber crimes such as identity theft, hacking, financial fraud, child pornography and corporate espionage. While launching a report on cyber security prepared by software industry body Nasscom, Home Minister P Chidambaram said that the government needs to fortify its capacity to deal with online security threats/crimes.
“We have taken numerous steps to protect the physical infrastructure...I think all that we have done to protect the infrastructure in the physical space seems to be a lighter task than when we face threats that have been outlined in the cyber space,” Chidambaram said, acknowledging the online crimes were on the rise in the country.
Chidambaram also stressed that the government needed to set up lawful interception capabilities. Nasscom's report Securing Our Cyber Frontiers' also calls for similar infrastructure to deal with online crime. The report also suggests designing and implementing a competency framework and setting up a Centre of Excellence for best practice in cyber security. Besides, it has called for establishing a cyber command within the defence forces. The minister said the government will look into recommendations made by Nasscom in its report.
It's notable that even the government has been victim of cyber crimes with a number of its websites being hit by cyber attacks. Sachin Pilot, minister of state for communications and IT, recently revealed that 112 sites including those of Planning Commission, the Finance Ministry and various State government agencies, were defaced by cyber attacks. The Defence Research and Development Organisation has also stressed the importance for having more resources to control these cyber attacks in near future.

Airtel Digital TV Recorder gets 500GB storage goodness


Airtel has announced that the Digital TV HD Recorder will now come with a 500GB hard drive. This is an upgrade from the 320GB drive DVR version that was in the market till now. Interestingly, the one time cost of buying the hardware remains the same – Rs 5,990, which includes one-month free subscription, which you can select from about half a dozen options.
We had reviewed the Airtel Digital TV HD Recorder recently and were quite impressed with the overall package. The device looks exactly the same as before, with the same hardware specification apart from the storage.
However, at that time, we had mentioned that 320GB storage space is a bit too less, particularly when you would be recording HD content on it. With the bigger hard drive, Airtel Digital TV HD recorder is now at par with the Tata Sky HD+, but has the advantage of more HD channels on the platform – 14 vs. 9 that Tata Sky offers. Both platforms are offering the event based Sony Max HD for this season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Galaxy S III to have a 4.8-inch screen


The world already caught a glimpse of an image, which sources claimed was of the Galaxy S III. What was intriguing was that the display size wasn’t exactly revealed yet – with rumours indicating that the screen size could be between 4.6 to 4.8 inches. Well, now according to the latest leak by Know Your Mobile, the Galaxy S III has been spotted next to a ruler and the important point to note out here is that the display size has been measured at 4.8 inches!

The image is definitely a tad confusing because of the placement of the ruler, the poor clarity and questions about where does the display actually start at, at the bottom. We’ll remind you that the display size is calculated diagonally (on the hypotenuse).  The source claims to have calculated the exact dimensions of the device to exclusively reveal that the Galaxy S III will have a 4.8 inches screen. The other debate whether the phone will have a home button or not has been put to rest in this image as well, as the source mentions that there aren’t any hardware buttons on the device. The only ones that will exist will be visible when the display is switched on.

From the image itself, the S III looks a lot like the Galaxy Nexus, which didn’t have any physical buttons, either. We had earlier carried an article which showed another ‘leaked’ image, but with these latest rumours, there are chances that the previous image was just a brilliantly Photoshopped picture. Button or no button? The handset is going to be announced on the 3rd of May, 2012, so all those rumours will be put to bed soon. 

With the available design, specs and pricing rumours, will the Galaxy S III really be a groundbreaking phone?
